Semi-Automated Forces Semi-Automated Forces or SAFOR is a military VR term which refers to artificial intelligence controlled troops on the battlefield in friendly, enemy and neutral platforms. It is only semi-automated as there is a user controlling the AI troops by issuing general or specific orders. How the troops carry out those orders in the specifics is usually up to them. An automated calibration method, designed for optical microscopes, may find a home in head mounted display units and heads-up augmented reality systems. On the 26th of May 2005, two companies (Zygote Media Group and e frontier) joined forces to give us a new model of open source distribution ? 3D avatars. Virtual worlds have shown themselves to have very real, and fairly powerful market forces when it comes to items from within them being traded openly on the internet. Time to stop arguing about the value of virtual, and start worrying about the reality of the virtual? It can be hard to truly explain the focus of a complex worlds system in a single article; this semi-slideshow format is designed to give you an overview in easilly digestible, bitesize chunks. Typically in VR, when we model erosive forces, we think of the smoothing effect of water. We think of smooth stones, smooth edges, and smooth cavities. We don't typically think of sharp edges and triangles. That may be a mistake. Computerised researchers are becoming an increasing trend it would seem. We've seen an increase in recent years of drug-testing robots and automated researchers. Glass researchers are apparently the latest field to be hit with the automation bug. Saya is an older gynoid from Japan. Developed in 2004, her initial role was as a robot receptionist. Since then, her development has improved to the point of a classroom assistant / telepresence portal for pre-teen education, and she is being used as such. Military forces around the world are, without exception, in favour of team contact sports. Football, rugby, American football, anything that throws players into melee, and also expects them to work together. Surely there is a way to impart the same skills, without physical contact, physical location, or even, the ability to physically move? This old article, from the long-defunct e-zine Imaginary Realities, looks at various automated 'solutions' for player versus player conflict in gameworlds and virtual life worlds. There have been a flurry of projects in recent years to automate the drug discovery process for faster and cheaper results. The latest is a modular, self-teaching machine for completely automated growing and analysing of cell cultures under different conditions, the prototype of which can handle 500 cultures per month.
